Bursa Injections—

WHAT IS IT?

A bursa is a fluid filled sac associated with many joints used to cushion the ligaments which attach to the joints. Bursas can become inflamed and become a source of pain. After bursitis is identified, placement for medication is easily done, by either feel or sometimes x-ray. Local anesthetic and anti-inflammatory (corticosteroid) are injected, and the patient will feel pain relief within 2-4 days. Ice can be helpful in the first 24 hours to reduce pain and inflammation from the injection.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS?

There is some risk of infection, bleeding, and side effects from the medication.
